Collins Ave clean-up Dec 3 2017

Meet Amber Mallm, our new watershed ambassador who organized this great clean-up.

Our new Watershed Ambassador, Amber Mallm, organized a great event today. Thanks to all the fantastic volunteers who helped clean up the ditch between Cindy Lane and Collins Ave in Ocean Township. This ditch funnels storm water into a small pipe that takes it under Rt 35,  into a ninety degree turn,  behind the new senior center and  into Weltz Park. It was totally dry today and there was lots of garbage, mostly beer cans and bottles. Thanks to the Long Branch Interact/Environmental Club for making this day a success. Your enthusiasm and energy are amazing. We hope to see you again on other projects.

Perhaps a garbage pail at the entrance to this trail would encourage people to carry out their garbage,

Two of our founding trustees: Laura Bagwell and Jeff King.

Trail weeding is finished!

Trail Maintenance

We just finished clearing the weeds and tidying up the trails, and everything is looking great! Swing by for a walk soon to check out the fresh paths and enjoy some time out in nature.

After several days of hard work weeding, Chuck finally finished the trail. The new push pull hoe was a wonder.

Did you know? Trails are the watershed’s first line of defense! Well-maintained trails prevent soil from washing into Whale Pond Brook, which keeps the water clear and protects the fish and wildlife that call it home.

Meanwhile the caterpillars are enjoying the milkweed in the butterfly garden.
And the hydrangea is looking very happy!

A busy day at Ross Island Park

Mark Brummer, Brummer Tree Service donated and delivered wood chips for the third year. Thanks Mark for your support. Now we need people next Wednesday to help spread the chips. 9:30 am

Chuck brought two Long Branch Boy Scouts and their Scout Master to the island to help cut weeds. Fun.

Other volunteers worked on clearing invasives from the banks to provide a clear view to the stone hut from the shelter.

Rain Barrel Build at Long Branch Community Garden

Today 6 families left the LB Community Garden with rain barrels that they built from plastic 32 gallon trash cans. Chuck demonstrated the method on a barrel to be used in the garden and then, ably aided by Long Branch Troop 148 scouts, people built their own rain barrels. It was a fun and productive 2 hours. Thanks to Long Branch Concordance for donating the trash cans, Chuck Ficca for donating the hardware and expertise, Levester Burnley for bringing the Scouts, Troy Todman and her daughter for videotaping and general good will.

Confluence

The Wild Rivers National Monument, New Mexico  was created this year and is already under ‘review’ by Secretary Zinke.  So remember, whether it be the confluence of the Rio Grande and the Red River in New Mexico or our Cranberry Brook and

Cranberry Brook and Whale Pond Brook confluence

Whale Pond Brook, we love and try to protect our rivers and watersheds. Last month at our local Sierra Club meeting we generated 19 letters to Secretary Zinke urging him to protect our national monuments and parks.  At the local level, please join us in our clean-ups, educational efforts,  trail building and gardening.  Get to know your watershed. Check out the events page on how you can get involved.
